A breast cancer diagnosis is likely one of the scariest events that a woman can face, but survivors can go on to live long and rewarding lives long after diagnosis thanks to life-saving advances in breast cancer treatments. Sometimes, a simple push in the right direction is all a patient needs to move on after a breast cancer diagnosis and begin the path to treatment.
Determining Your Treatment Options.
After detecting abnormalities during a screening mammogram and/or clinical breast exam, doctors may order further screening tests, such as a diagnostic mammogram, breast MRI, ultrasound, or biopsy. Fortunately, a wide range of breast cancer treatment options are available, and your breast care specialist can help you develop a comprehensive breast treatment plan based on your unique medical needs. A breast care nurse will be available to provide informational resources and contacts for other specialists in your area.
Dealing with Friends and Family.
A breast cancer diagnosis can affect friends and loved ones as well. Everyone has their own methods of coping with breast cancer, and for some, telling others about their diagnosis may be as difficult as hearing the news themselves. There is no right way to handle a diagnosis; when, how, and if you decide to tell people is entirely up to you, but it is important to seek positive input or speak to your doctor if negative emotions begin to interfere with your well-being.
Managing the Fear.
Everyone responds differently when it comes to handling common breast cancer fears. Some people choose to postpone further news, others want to learn everything they can about breast cancer, and still others choose to simply fight with everything they’ve got. Take advantage of available educational resources and support networks, as well as your breast care specialist.
From diagnosis to treatment, we here at Menorah Medical Center abide by the highest standards of breast care as outlined by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. We are also the only breast care center in Johnson County to offer Mammosite® technology. With Halloween quickly approaching, it is essential to consider the health and safety of your family and guests in order to avoid any medical mishaps. Between food allergies, injuries, and costumes, there are several items that can go wrong without proper preparation and planning. Keep your family and guests safe this holiday with these simple Halloween safety tips from our team here at Menorah Medical Center:
Trick-Or-Treating
Candy is certainly one of the best parts of Halloween for children, but it is important to moderate their sugar intake to avoid any health complications. Consider creating a candy plan which limits the amount of candy your child can eat on any given day. Be sure to inspect treats for signs of tampering and for non-commercially wrapped items. Preparing a meal before trick-or-treating can help to discourage children from snacking on uninspected items.
Costumes
Look for costumes made of fire-resistant materials that do not impede movement. Also consider using non-toxic makeup rather than masks in order to avoid impeding vision—just be sure to test it out on a small area beforehand. The FDA and American Academy of Ophthalmology have both issued statements discouraging the use of decorative contact lenses, which may lead to vision loss due to infection.
Party Safety and Travel
When preparing for a Halloween party, use color additives that have been approved by the FDA and look for pasteurized drinks. If you are travelling to a party, it is especially important to be wary of pedestrians on the road; studies from the Safe Kids Worldwide Foundation reveal that, on average, there are twice as many child pedestrian fatalities on Halloween compared to any other day of the year.
