American Heart Month is a time for people of all ages and lifestyles to learn about the threat of heart disease and adopt the healthy habits that will keep this common, often fatal disease under control. It does not take a dramatic change to start nurturing your heart better, and you may see a big difference in your heart health after making these simple changes.
Take Time for Yourself
If you have a family or a demanding job, it can be difficult to give yourself the wholesome foods, exercise, and relaxation you need to maintain a healthy heart. However, you should make your health a priority where possible, because a little alone time can keep your stress low. When you do not have the burden of stress, you will be more likely to make more positive decisions in your diet and your physical activity.
Enjoy Fresh Foods
You might consider dietary changes more of a chore than a pleasure, and this attitude could have you relying on the same unhealthy eating habits that have been hurting your heart. Instead of thinking about foods you need to cut out, you might try setting a goal to include new, healthy options each week. As you try more wholesome new foods, you will begin to crave nutritious foods instead of fatty, salty ones.
Use Exercise for Stress Relief
Stress and physical inactivity are two of the leading causes of heart disease, and you can combat them both by including more exercise in your daily routine. Any way you choose to get up and get moving will do you good, and it can also serve as a healthy outlet for stress.
At Menorah Medical Center, you can get the best possible care for your heart, including ongoing guidance for healthier living through classes, support groups, and online resources. If you are a first-time mother preparing for your labor and delivery, you may be curious about what exactly to expect when you go to the birth center. While the specific details of your birth plan will be worked out by you and your obstetrician, there are some standard aspects of the delivery process that you need to know. Keep reading to learn more about the delivery process as you get ready to welcome your child into the world.
Plans may change on delivery day
Some unpredictable complications could cause your birth plan to change when you arrive at your selected birth center. For example, you may need a cesarean section or assisted delivery because of issues that don’t arise until you are in labor. If your doctor informs you that it is not advisable to continue with your pre-arranged birth plan, remember that changes are made for the safety of you and your baby, so you should remain calm and at ease.
Feeding is a post-delivery priority
It is recommended that mothers breastfeed their newborns, and this should begin almost immediately after the baby is born. Unless there are serious complications threatening your or your child’s health, you will be given the opportunity to try feeding your baby once he or she has been cleaned and wrapped in a warm blanket. Breastfeeding can be challenging at first, so don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from the hospital staff.
Your baby will spend some time in the nursery
In order to ensure that your baby is healthy, a series of tests and procedures will be carried out in the birth center’s nursery. Most mothers are happy for the brief break just after delivery, as it provides a chance to rest and get ready to spend more time bonding with their newborns.
When you plan your delivery at Menorah Medical Center, you can be sure that your baby is given the right start for a lifetime of good health. Schedule a tour of our birth center and learn more about creating a birth plan by visiting our website or calling us at (888) 429-8153.
